The bottom line in professional motivation addresses the aim: how to succeed in life. For me, life is the framework, the context, within which the action takes place; and “normal” life activity a way of refining our personal practice. “Success” is not the aim; “success” is developing personal discipline.

Success in the normal world of the music industry holds no charms for me. Seeing clearly that the “successful life” of the rock group was madness, lunacy, corrupting, was a large part of why I left that life for Sherborne.

So, acting in the world is a way of practising our discipline; the aim is to “acquire” discipline. Discipline then becomes our framework for action, and any “success in the world” a by-product of that aim. A sufficiency of worldly success, in this sense, is that we may continue to refine our practice.

My Father’s injunction (as an estate agent & auctioneer in a small Dorset market town) on becoming successful in business was: Make yourself the kind of person that people want to do business with.

Also, refection on negativity; the extent to which media life is driven by negativity; how this damages the culture & ourselves personally. What a struggle: to be within a field of negativity and not going with the current, particularly when there are so many “good reasons” for being negative.
