To a correspondent…
On Guitar Craft courses, we get people together in a defined context for a period of time, apply ourselves to specific tasks, and allow space for the music to enter. If we weren’t together, nothing would happen. If we are together, something may happen. Given a sincerity of intent, allied to persistence, we find it does. This is always surprising. Not quite taking-it-for-granted, more like relying on it to happen. We rely-on-it-to-happen by addressing how we may ourselves be available.
We don’t know if our Friend will visit, but we can clean the house, have food in the kitchen, the guestroom ready, and listen for a knock. In Guitar Craft, the knock is a Silence of inexpressible depth.
There is a remarkable benevolence that seeks to enter our world, if only we would give it half a chance – not even half! How about even one step? We don’t have to do anything: we just have to be together, doing nothing. And while we are together, doing nothing, we might do a little something – like practice guitars. And cook food. And clean the bathrooms. And sit in the morning.
There is no way a musician can play music. It is not possible. It is possible that music plays the musician, providing the musician is trained, available & a servant of the Muse.
It’s not a question of teaching, or being a teacher, more about getting people together in a situation with an agreed aim, and enough available experience to see what is needed & how to respond.
