In questo giorno, venti anni fa, il primo corso di Guitar Craft iniziò in West Virginia. Che cos’è il Guitar Craft, in questo Venerdì Santo, vent’anni dopo?
Primariamente, il GC è un centro focale per sviluppare una pratica personale: una pratica per sviluppare un senso della presenza personale, dello spazio intorno a noi, e la nostra relazione tra le due. I mezzi principali per ciò sono il silenzio, la musica, la chitarra; e le maniere in cui esse stanno insieme per l’individuo, piccoli Circoli e la più grande comunità del GC.
Il silenzio contribuisce potentemente a molti corsi di GC, specialmente quando sono tenuti in luoghi con una stabilita tradizione di preghiera, riflessione e meditazione, come seminari, monasteri e luoghi di ritiro. Il silenzio sembra anche capace di penetrare luoghi che aiutano meno ovviamente il tempo di quiete.
Quelli che frequentano i corsi vengono da tutte le strade e condizioni di vita, per molti dei quali le condizioni lavorative non sono né esternamente, né apertamente, incoraggianti il tentativo personale. La sfida, quando si lasciano i corsi, è spesso questa: come posso portare con me questa qualità di silenzio, e tenerla chiusa dentro al riparo del rumore della vita quotidiana?
Com’è che la musica appare, come se dal nulla, portando speranza ad un cuore disperato, cibo per orecchie affamate, vita ad uno spirito stanco? La musica riesce anche a sgorgare dagli strumenti di suonatori all’inizio con poca capacità esecutiva, esperienza o talento musicale.
Le tecniche per chitarra del GC si sono sviluppate in venti anni di applicazione e raffinamento, a seguito di applicazione durante 27 anni di suonare & spettacoli, in un’ampia varietà di contesti e di spazi, in quattro continenti.
La pratica personale è necessaria per applicare, interiorizzare e sviluppare il materiale presentato; ma una caratteristica che colpisce del Guitar Craft è il grado con il quale ciò è intrapreso nei gruppi, piccoli, grandi ed anche molto grandi.
Attualmente, ci sono un numero crescente di Circoli del Guitar Craft di varie dimensioni che si incontrano regolarmente, talvolta in condizioni difficili, nel mondo. Insieme ai partecipanti non-suonatori attratti dalla pratica del GC, questi raccolgono il corpo della più ampia comunità del GC.
Corsi introduttivi alla Nuova Accordatura Standard e al Guitar Craft si tengono regolarmente in differenti paesi, resi possibili e disponibili dalla crescente esperienza di quelli coinvolti nel Guitar Craft sin dai primi corsi.
Il ventesimo anniversario di oggi non è importante, per me. Il cambiamento maggiore sta arrivando il prossimo anno, con il ventunesimo anniversario. Il valore del compleanno di oggi è come una campana-che-suona per avvertirci di ciò che sta arrivando, per prepararci per il cambiamento per il prossimo periodo di ventuno anni.
Quando raggiungiamo quasi-la-fine di un processo, sembra raggiungerci e portarci verso di sé. Qualcosa è richiesto, ma non molto. Una immagine chiara di ciò che è richiesto per il 2006, che comincerebbe la vita dei prossimi ventuno anni di Guitar Craft, è ora disponibile. Tenendo questa immagine, permettiamo al suo potere di attrazione di portarci verso di sé.
Il corso programmato a Lunlunta (Mendoza, Argentina) per Aprile 2006 celebra effettivamente il ventunesimo anniversario e (il potenziale) completamento della prima generazione delle attività del GC. Il proposto di Scuola Estiva del 2006 in Inghilterra sarebbe l’inizio della seconda generazione.

On this day, twenty years ago, the first Guitar Craft course began in West Virginia. What is Guitar Craft, on this Easter Day, twenty years later?
Primarily, GC is a focus for developing a personal practice: one of developing a sense of personal presence, the space around us, and our relationship between the two. The primary means for this are silence, music, the guitar; and the ways these come together for the individual, small Circles and the larger GC community.
Silence is a powerful contributor to many GC courses, particularly where they are held in facilities with an established tradition of prayer, reflection and meditation, such as seminaries, monasteries and places of retreat. Silence also seems able to penetrate facilities less obviously supportive of quiet time.
Those who attend courses come from all walks and conditions of life, many of whose normal working conditions are not externally, nor overtly, encouraging of personal endeavour. The challenge, when leaving courses, is often this: how may I carry this quality of silence with me, and hold it close inside the noise of daily life?
How is it that music appears, as if from nowhere, bringing hope to a despairing heart, food for hungry ears, life to a tired spirit? Music even manages to spring from the instruments of beginning players with little executive capacity, experience or musical talent.
GC guitar techniques have developed over 20 years of application & refinement, following application during 27 years of playing & performance, in a wide variety of contexts & spaces, on four continents.
Personal practice is necessary to apply, internalise and develop the material presented; but a striking feature of Guitar Craft is the degree to which this is undertaken within groups, small, large and even very large.
Currently, there are a growing number of Guitar Circles of varying sizes that meet regularly, sometimes under difficult conditions, throughout the world. Together with non-playing participants drawn to GC practice, these comprise the body of the wider GC community.
Introductory courses to the New Standard Tuning and Guitar Craft are held regularly in different countries, made possible & available by the increasing experience of those involved in Guitar Craft since the earliest courses.
Today’s 20th. anniversary is not the important one, for me. The major shift is coming next year, with the 21st. anniversary. The value of today’s birthday is as a sounding-bell to alert us to what is coming, that we might prepare for the shift to the next 21-year period.
When we reach almost-the-end of a process, it seems to reach back & draw us towards it. Something is required, but not a lot. A clear picture of what is required for 2006, which would begin the next 21 years of Guitar Craft life, is now available. By holding this picture, we allow its power of attraction to draw us towards it.
The course planned at Lunlunta (Mendoza, Argentina) for April 2006 effectively celebrates the 21st. anniversary & (potential) completion of the first generation of GC activities. The proposed 2006 Summer School of The Virtuous Circle Project in England would be the beginning of the second generation.
